Mono Lake Tufas

Tufa is a variety of limestone, formed by the precipitation of carbonate minerals from ambient temperature water bodies. The tufas in Mono Lake are formed from underground springs that bubble up from the lake's bottom.

Mono Lake is a fascinating place to see. The tufa rock formations are natural works of art, it's hypersaline and alkaline waters make it inhabitable for fish, and yet it supports a great diversity of wildlife.
